The Mediterranean island Lampedusa is a bottleneck for refugees on the way to Europe and has come to be synonymous with migration and tragedies at sea. This is the image that dominates in the media. In
his photo series “Lipadusa,” the young Italian photographer Calogero Cammalleri (b. 1993), who grew up in Germany, traces the original character of the island. From November 2013 Cammalleri lived on the island for nine months. He was supported by a one-year grant from Fabrica, the communication research centre of the Benetton Group. The Lipadusa project, moreover, was realised under the patronage of the United Nations High Committee for Refugees (UNHCR). The Museum Kunst der Westküste shows the photographs for the first time in Germany.
